Senior Dog Care Program

Nittany Valley Animal Rescue’s Senior Dog Care Program is dedicated to ensuring that elderly and medically fragile dogs are treated with dignity, comfort, and love during the final chapter of their lives.

Senior dogs are often the most overlooked animals in rescue care. While they are frequently calm, affectionate, and deeply bonded companions, they are also the most difficult to rehome due to the high cost of ongoing veterinary care, medications, and age-related health concerns. As a result, many senior dogs face extended shelter stays or the risk of euthanasia through no fault of their own.

Through targeted fundraising efforts and the support of compassionate foster families, our program works to remove the financial and logistical barriers that prevent seniors from finding permanent homes. Funds raised are used specifically to cover veterinary care, medications, mobility support, specialized diets, and comfort-focused treatments—allowing adopters and fosters to focus on providing love rather than worrying about expenses.

When a foster or adoptive home is not immediately available, senior dogs are welcomed into our onsite end-of-life care facility, a quiet, low-stress environment designed specifically for their needs. This space provides:

Comfortable, climate-controlled housing

Soft bedding and mobility-friendly layouts

Individualized feeding and medication schedules

Daily human interaction and enrichment

Close monitoring of health and comfort

Each dog receives an individualized care plan developed in coordination with veterinary partners, prioritizing quality of life, pain management, and emotional well-being. Decisions regarding medical intervention or humane end-of-life care are made with compassion, transparency, and the dog’s best interest at heart.

Whenever possible, we strive to place senior dogs into forever homes where they can spend their remaining time surrounded by family. When that is not possible, we ensure they are never alone, never neglected, and never treated as expendable.

This program reflects our belief that a dog’s worth does not diminish with age—and that every animal deserves comfort, respect, and love at the end of life.
